These companies sought laboriously to make these forms work on an Opt-Out basis instead of Opt-In. In other words, unless you tell them not to, they can share the information however they want. To the fact that we are all busy with our lives give an advantage to these companies by default. While we are busy, it’s a stretch to even bother, so most of us don’t give it the time of day. If you do have free time, below we have compiled a list information of the largest financial institutions. With the compiled list, you can easily opt-out of those institutions all at once and ideally not have to do it again for the next few years at the least. For the most part, you’ll need your bank account and credit card number(s) to fulfill the form requirements.
Bank & Credit Card Privacy Opt-Out Info:
- The information they are talking about can include:
- Social Security Number
- Your Income (How Much You Make)
- Your Balances (How Much You Have)
- Your Transaction History (What You Buy)
- Your Credit & Payment History (How Much You Borrow)
- The amount of sharing varies widely:
- For our affiliates to market to you = We can share with companies who are under the same ownership or control.
- For non-affiliates to market to you = We can sell your information to anyone! They don’t even have to be financially-related companies.

Bottom Line:
If you’re limited on time, here is a list of the institutions that share with non-affiliates (opt out of these first): Ally, Capital One, Chase, Citibank (Bank & Credit Cards), Discover, IA Card Services. Fulfilling this list will be pretty time consuming, but if you do have time, I would recommend you to opt-out. Perhaps do one everyday while you’re on lunch break or before you go to bed.
